About the Author:
Evelyn McDonnell is a journalist and Author; she is a former editor for the Miami Herald. She has written four books such as Mamarama: A Memoir of Sex, Kids and Rock ‘n’ Roll, Army of She: Icelandic, Iconoclastic, Irrepressible Bjork and Rent by Jonathan Larson.
In four years the teenage members of the Runaways did what no other group of female rock musicians before them could: they released four albums for a major label and toured the world. The Runaways busted down doors for every girl band that followed. Joan Jett, Sandy West, Cherie Currie, lead guitarist Lita Ford, and bassists Jackie Fox and Vicky Blue were pre-punk bandits, fostering revolution girl style decades before that became a riot catchphrase. The story of the Runaways has never been told in its entirety. Drawing on interviews with most of this seminal rock band’s former members as well as controversial manager Kim Fowley, Queens of Noise will look beyond the lurid voyeuristic appeal of a sex-drugs-rock ’n’ roll saga to give the band its place in musical, feminist, and cultural history.
Miami International Book Fair Interview:
“With many legendary bands in the list, why did you choose to write about The Runaways?” Evelyn said she has always been interested in their story. The story of women in the Rock n’ Roll scene and how the all-girl rock band was unappreciated. The Book concentrates on their story from the ups and downs, and the many levels of sex, drugs, and fame.
“How is this book different from other previous versions of work?” Evelyn responded there are two films; one is called Edgeplay: A film about The Runaways, thou the film is directed and told in the director’s point of view. The second film is The Runaways feature starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. The film told the story in the eyes of Cherie Currie and the complete story on all the girls in the band. There are research papers and articles as well but only anchor it with facts. In her book, she wanted to pay attention to all the girls in the band, the music, and how their music was done.
“What is your inspiration behind your work, your books? Is there a message you want to send to the audience?” Evelyn said “I want to inspire women to take risks, take challenges, and to own themselves, to own their sexuality. But I also want to warn the people on what can go wrong. Tell people the true story of The Runways.”
“I have noticed by your books that genre is music and Rock n’ Roll; Why the genre of music?” Evelyn said “In the Miami Herald, I wrote about everything from Hip-Hop to Country. Rock n’ Roll became a specialty for me because I love Rock n’ Roll myself but I wrote about everything.”
“I need to ask, who are your favorite bands?” Evelyn answers “My favorite bands currently are…The Runaways and the Beatles.” I know for a fact, we will get along just fine.
“What are your favorite books?” Evelyn said “My favorite books are The Circle and Coal to Diamonds: Memoir by Beth Ditto.”
