#15 Hurricanes beat USF 49-21 and improve to 4-0

The #15 rank University of Miami defeated University of South Florida 49-21 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

The Canes got on the board early when running back Dallas Crawford scored on a 7 yard run to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. On the Bulls first offensive drive running back Marcus Shaw rushed for 44 yards to Miami’s 14 yard-line. A couple plays later, Shaw ran into the end zone for the touchdown to tie the game at 7. The Canes started on their own 9 yard-line and that’s when quarterback Stephen Morris connected with wide receiver Philip Dorsett for 55 yards.

Few plays later Morris connected with wide receiver Herb Waters in the back of the end zone to regain the lead 14-7. After the Bulls offense punted, Miami extended the lead to 21-7 when Morris connected with wide receiver Stacy Coley for 34 yards and the touchdown. The Canes extended the lead to 28-7, when Bulls quarterback Steven Bench was sacked by Shayon Green and recovered in the end zone by Jimmy Gaines.

It was only the second quarter but the game was starting to get out of control for the Bulls. The Canes added more cushion to the lead, when Duke Johnson got in the end zone and extended the lead to 35-7. At halftime the score was 35-7 and it was all but over for USF. The third quarter started with the Canes extending the lead to 42-7, when quarterback Ryan Williams connected with wide receiver Stacy Coley for 11-yard touchdown. Furthermore, Canes scored one more touchdown on a Dallas Crawford run to extend the lead 49-7.

The Bulls scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but it was too late for a comeback. Morris finished the game 11 of 16 for 222 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, left the game early for re-aggravating his ankle and Williams took over for him. Williams finished the game 8 of 14 for 153 yards, one touchdown, and threw for an interception. Bulls quarterback Bench went 13 of 27 for 189 yards, one touchdown, and threw for an interception.

Johnson had 14 carries for 84 yards and one touchdown. Furthermore, Johnson underwent concussion exams because of a helmet hit he sustained on the chin. Bulls’ running back Shaw finished the game with 20 carries for 127 yards and a touchdown. Coley finished the game with four receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown. The Canes had a total of 540 yards, including 375 passing and 165 rushing.

(4-0) Hurricanes improved to 4-0 in the season and will face Georgia Tech next Saturday. Time for the game is TBA.
