#14 Hurricanes defeated Georgia Tech 45-30

The #14 Miami Hurricanes defeated Georgia Tech 45-30 to improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

By the midway point of the first quarter Georgia Tech took a 17-7 lead on the Hurricanes and it there was pure silence in Sun Life Stadium. The Yellow Jackets got on the board early, when running back David Sims ran the ball in the end zone for 7-0 lead. In the next drive for the Hurricanes, quarterback Stephen Morris connected with wide receiver Philip Dorsett for 40 yards and a touchdown.

Georgia Tech regained the lead 10-7, when kicker Harrison Butker connected on a 45-yard field goal. Duke Johnson had a critical fumble in their own territory and was recovered by Georgia Tech Brandon Watts. Running back Charlie Perkins rushed for 31 yards and the touchdown to give the Yellow Jackets a 17-7 lead in the first quarter. Additionally, they could have extended the lead to 28-7, but the Hurricanes forced a fumble that was recovered by Jimmy Gaines on their own 22 yard-line.

The Hurricanes cut the lead to 17-14, when Morris connected with wide receiver Clive Walford for a four yards touchdown. Hurricanes tied the game at 17, when Matt Goudis connected on a 24-yard field goal. In the third quarter, Hurricanes finally took the lead, when Morris connected with receiver Allen Hurns for 68 yards and the touchdown for a 24-17 lead.

Philip Dorsett committed a miscue, when he fumbled a punt and was recovered by Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets would have tied the game at 24 apiece, but Butker missed the extra point. The Hurricanes regained the lead 31-23 on a Dallas Crawford 3 yards touchdown run. Yellow Jackets quarterback Vad Lee made a crucial mistake, when Rayshawn Jenkins intercepted him. Crawford got his second touchdown of the afternoon, when he got into the end zone on an 18 yard run.

Ladarius Gunter intercepted a pass from quarterback Justin Thomas and returned 30 yards for the touchdown. That takeaway for the Hurricanes defense would give them a 45-23 lead. Georgia Tech got a meaningless touchdown to cut the lead to 45-30, but it was too late for the Yellow Jackets. Morris finished the game 17-22 with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Vad Lee was 5-13 for 63 yards and one interception.

Johnson finished the game with 22 carries for 184 yards and no touchdowns. Additionally, Crawford finished the game with two touchdowns on 5 carries for 31 yards. Furthermore,  Hurns finished the game with four receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown. Dorsett and Walford finished the game with a touchdown each. The Hurricanes finished the game with a total of 551 yards, in contrast to the Yellow Jackets 401. Hurricanes were outrushed by the Yellow Jackets 335 to 227, but had more passing yards 324 to 66.

The Hurricanes will play the Tarheels on Thursday at 7:30 pm at North Carolina.
