The Dolphins defeated the Cleveland Browns 23-10 in the season opener, as kicker Caleb Sturgis connected on three field goals. Rookie kicker Caleb Sturgis beat incumbent kicker Dan Carpenter for the starting position and in the game today it showed the reasons why. The rookie connected on a 45-yard field goal to give the Dolphins 3-0 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter Caleb Sturgis connected on a 49-yard field goal to give the Dolphins a 6-0 lead. The Browns responded back before halftime, as QB Brandon Weeden connected on a 7- yard pass to WR Jordan Cameron. In the third quarter, Ryan Tannehill connected on a 34-yard pass to WR Brian Hartline for the TD, giving the Dolphins 13-7 lead. Kicker Billy Cundiff connected on a 39-yard field goal to cut the lead 13-10 in the third quarter. The Dolphins closed the door on the Browns in the fourth quarter, as RB Daniel Thomas scored on a one-yard td run and K Caleb Sturgis connected on a 39-yard field goal to extend the lead 23-10. Furthermore, the Dolphins defense was unstoppable today, as the Browns offense committed three turnovers. In the first possession of the game the Browns, where facing a 3 and 8 situation on the Miami 40-yardline, as QB Brandon Weeden pass intended for WR Travis Benjamin was intercepted by CB Nolan Carroll. The Browns where facing an 3 and 2 situation, as QB Brandon Weeden pass intended for WR Greg Little was intercepted by CB Dimirti Patterson, before the end of the first quarter. Additionally, the Browns had the ball on the Miami 27-yardline, as CB Dimirti Patterson intercepted QB Brandon Weeden pass intended for WR Jordan Cameron. The Dolphins defense only allowed the Browns to converted on 1 out 14 third down conversions, in contrast to the Dolphins who converted 8 out of 16 third down conversions. DE Cameron Wake had 2½ and DT Randy Starks had 1 1/2 sacks providing a spark to the Dolphins defense. Furthermore, the third overall pick in the NFL draft, Dion Jordan had one sack of his own in his regular season debut and Derrick Shelby added one sack of his own. The Dolphins finished the game with six sacks and that’s a great sign for defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle. QB Ryan Tannehill finished the game 24/38 for 272 yards 1 td and 1 interception. The Browns QB Brandon Weeden had an awful game finished 26-53 for 289 yards 1 td and 3 int’s. WR Brian Hartline was the leading receiver for the game finished with 9 receptions for 114 yards and a TD. Additionally, Dolphins receiver Brandon Gibson finished the game with 7 receptions for 77 yards and TE Charles Clay 5 receptions for 54 yards. The Dolphins biggest weapon WR Mike Wallace was nonexistent finished the game with 1 receptions for 15 yards and seemed unhappy after the game. Additionally, the Dolphins running attack was nonexistent Lamar Miller finished the game 3 yards on 10 carries and Daniel Thomas 14 yards on 8 carries. The Dolphins next Sunday will take on the Indianapolis Colts at 1:00 pm from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
